Input to the Australian Government in preparation for the 2024 UN Summit of the Future
A new statement from the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network for Australia, NZ & Pacific (SDSN AusNZPac) and the UN Global Compact Network Australia (UNGCNA) urges the Australian Government to support efforts to strengthen global cooperation at the upcoming United Nations 2024 Summit of the Future.
The Summit of the Future is a critical opportunity for world governments to forge a new and much needed international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.
More than half way through Agenda 2030, the world is facing stagnation and decline in most of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as a range of continuing global and interconnected challenges and “polycrises”, including climate change and regional conflicts, that threaten to erode progress even further. The impacts of these challenges transcend national borders, and no one country can solve them alone.
It is therefore more important than ever for the world to be able to cooperate and collaborate much better. The Summit of the Future is a unique and vital opportunity for the world’s governments to come together update and upgrade the global multilateral system.
But this agenda is much bigger than governments alone. It is of utmost importance to other sectors, both as societal stakeholders affected by global challenges, as well as essential contributors to support action.
For this reason, SDSN AusNZPac and UNGCNA, as organisations mobilising leadership and action by the academic sector and the private sector towards achieving the SDGs, teamed up to develop this statement, with guidance from the leading Sustainble development expert on the SDSN AusNZPac Leadership Council.
The statement urges the Australian Government to support efforts to strengthen global cooperation at the Summit of the Future, including the continuation of the SDGs beyond 2030, the focus on youth and future generations, and going beyond GDP. It also showcases how our sectors can support the Australian Government to implement this agenda.
